Many people call the Manaslu circuit the best in Nepal for all-round trekking in the Himalayas. Starting in the green foothills at Arughat and following the ancient route of the salt traders, you trek along narrow paths up the narrow, steep-sided, wooded valley and through traditional villages that cling to the hillsides above the tumbling white water of the Bhuri Gandhaki River. The valley broadens to reveal beautiful alpine scenery with the high snow-capped peaks of the Manaslu Massif dominating the skyline.
Beyond forests of pine, rhododendron and bamboo, you follow a route that circles the great Manaslu peak (8156m), the eighth highest mountain in the world. Overnight stops in tea-houses offer welcome comfort after the exertions of the trail. This also helps to support the livelihoods of the people living within the Annapurna and Manaslu conservation areas, and you can enjoy the variety of home-grown fresh produce on offer. Some of these tea-houses are quite basic, but the same warm welcome is given to travelers wherever they stay the night. Beyond Samagaon, the largest village in the area, the trail follows the Larke Pass and down the Marsyangdi valley to join the Annapurna circuit route to Besi Sahar.
