17 Days Dhaulagiri Trek

If you are looking for adventure among the high peaks of the Himalayas, this is one of the finest of trekking routes. It is best suited to those experienced in exploring rugged terrain and who are physically fit. Be prepared to travel in snowy conditions where visibility may be restricted. This won’t be typical of the entire route, but it is possible in the higher passes around Tukche Peak (6837m) and Dhaulagiri (8167m), where the weather can quickly turn.

The route begins at Beni, following the Kali Gandaki River and up the beautiful valley of the Myagdi Khola River, north to the peaks of the Dhaulagiri Himal. You will pass through a changing landscape of steep wooded hillsides, rushing waters and isolated villages, crossing the river on rope bridges as you climb higher into the more open landscape beyond Muri, where the views are dominated by the snow-covered peaks and ridges of Dhaulagiri’s west face. Dhaulagiri Base Camp is situated on the bare, rocky slope just below the snow line.

After a rest day for acclimatization, the trek continues alongside the glacier and then cuts across the flank of the mountain along a gentle incline leading up to French Pass. From here the view opens up to include the peaks of Mukut Himal (6328m), Sita Chuchura (6611m) and Tashi Kang (6386m), which surround the Hidden Valley, a broad expanse of high grassland. The route descends to the Thapa Pass, then eventually to Marpha and Jomsom and back to the Kali Gandaki River.
