The Ghorepani Poon Hill route is one of the most popular short treks in Nepal. It offers an experience of the breathtaking landscape of the Annapurna Himal that involves no difficult high climbs and can be attempted by anyone who is reasonably fit and healthy. An hour’s drive from Pokhara, the ‘City of Lakes’, the trek begins with a crossing of the Modi Khola River by suspension bridge and an ascent through picturesque villages and across terraced hillsides with views of the distinctive snowy peak of Machhapuchare rising high above the range of lower peaks.

The second day of the trek is a leisurely walk along an easy trail through the woods, which are dominated by rhododendrons, the national flower of Nepal. The trail eventually reaches Ghorepani Village base camp. An ascent of Poon Hill the following morning is the high point of the trek, with spectacular views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Fishtail and Nilgiri, their snow capped peaks gleaming in the sunshine. After a refreshing night’s rest in Ghorepani, nothing could be finer than a dawn ascent of Poon Hill before breakfast to watch the sunrise.

The trail descends from Ghorepani to the charming Gurung village of Ghandruk, perched on a hillside above the river valley, its houses bedecked with flowers and with a stunning backdrop of the Annapurna range. The village is reached by a steep path with many stone steps. The trek continues down to the sleepy little village of Deurali, and then to Pothana on the road back to Pokhara.
