Monika Thapa Magar – Women-Led Leadership in Nepal Tourism

Monika Thapa Magar represents a new generation of leadership in Nepal’s trekking and hospitality industry. As co-leader of Nepal Hiking and Hotel Sohum, she brings a thoughtful, people-focused approach to travel, combining professionalism with genuine care for guests, local communities, and the future of tourism in Nepal.

As the younger daughter of Tilak Thapa Magar, Monika grew up closely connected to trekking, mountain culture, and hospitality from an early age. Rather than simply inheriting a tourism business, she has gradually built her own role within the company through hands-on involvement, academic study, and daily interaction with travellers from around the world.

She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Hotel Management and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree focused on Yoga and Meditation studies, balancing both academic life and professional responsibilities alongside her work in Nepal’s tourism sector.

Monika believes travel should feel personal, welcoming, and meaningful — not rushed or overly commercial. Her focus is creating experiences where travellers feel genuinely cared for, especially solo travellers, women travellers, couples, and families visiting Nepal for the first time.

Under her leadership, Nepal Hiking continues to support greater participation of women in Nepalese tourism by encouraging opportunities in trekking, hospitality, operations, and guest services. She strongly believes tourism can help create confidence, independence, and long-term opportunities for local women and younger generations.

Many female travellers appreciate the comfort and reassurance of travelling with a women-led company that values respectful communication, safety, flexibility, and genuine hospitality.

Alongside her work in tourism, Monika maintains a strong personal interest in yoga, mindfulness, and well-being practices inspired by Art of Living philosophy. This calm and balanced approach naturally influences the company culture and the way guests are welcomed and supported throughout their time in Nepal.

Her leadership reflects a quiet but meaningful shift within Nepalese tourism — where younger women are increasingly shaping a more inclusive, responsible, and people-centred future for travel in the Himalayas.
