The journey to the Everest Base Camp (EBC) often commences from the bustling airstrip of Lukla. Yet, there’s a road less travelled that starts from Salleri and goes through Tham Danda, providing a richer and more profound insight into the heart of Nepal. This route captures the essence of the Himalayan vistas, the culture of its people, and the timeless allure of the world’s highest peak.

Starting Point: Kathmandu

Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is the confluence of ancient cultures and modern chaos. Nestled in a valley surrounded by hills, its bustling streets and UNESCO heritage sites make it an attraction. However, for adventurers, Kathmandu is the starting point of their Himalayan dream.

The Drive: Kathmandu to Salleri

Driving from Kathmandu to Salleri is an experience to cherish. The journey, spanning approximately 8-12 hours, unwinds through winding roads that cut across verdant hills, terraced fields, and traditional Nepali villages. The sights of the rivers, especially the Sun Koshi, teeming below the high bridges you cross, add thrill to this journey.

While direct buses from Kathmandu’s New Bus Park ply to Salleri, many prefer renting a private vehicle. A jeep or SUV ensures comfort and flexibility to pause and capture the scenic grandeur on your camera or soak in the beauty.

Salleri: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Salleri, the district headquarters of Solukhumbu, offers a charming blend of traditional stone houses, modern buildings, and local bazaars. This town serves as a supply hub for many remote villages, making it a bustling place to restock and revitalize before heading deeper into the trek.

From Salleri to Tham Danda

Post Salleri, your journey’s essence shifts. As your vehicle ambles on the rugged roads to Tham Danda, you’re introduced to the untouched parts of the Solukhumbu region. Unlike the higher altitudes where tourism dominates, it’s life in its rawest form here. Terraced fields, children herding cattle, and women working on traditional looms are common sights.

Tham Danda, a lesser-known pitstop on the way to EBC, offers a unique vantage point. The vistas here are untainted by crowds of tourists, and the hospitality is as genuine as it gets.

The Trek to Everest Base Camp

After Tham Danda, the real trek begins. You’ll join the trail that weaves through lush forests, crosses roaring rivers, and climbs steep ascents to reveal the colossal peaks of the Himalayas.
