Set for adventure in the beautiful region of Central Nepal? You’ll want to conquer the challenging and rewarding Annapurna Circuit Trek for an unforgettable trek. So get ready to start with this seven-step guide on all the essential points from equipment to safety.

Annapurna Region
Annapurna Circuit – Thorung La Pass – 5416m

Check the Trekking Conditions Before you join for Annapurna Circuit Trek.

It’s important to check on the trail conditions before setting off. Consider if there is any potential risk of landslides, as these can disrupt trails and travellers. Check with an authorized tourism board or local trekking agency for the latest updates on trekking conditions before embarking on your journey.

Buy the Necessary Gear before Heading Out for Trek

Before setting out on your trek, invest in proper gear. Of course, quality will vary depending on the item. Still, you’ll want a pair of comfortable and sturdy shoes, a water container, a sleeping bag, hiking poles, and an emergency whistle, among other items. With the right equipment, you’ll be prepared for the journey ahead!

Make Sure You’re Physically and Mentally Ready

The Annapurna Circuit is an iconic trek but also one of the toughest. You need to make sure that you’re physically and mentally prepared for the exertion of constant walking. Get a medical checkup if your health is at risk. It’s also important to gradually work up to longer hikes and gain experience with trekking in general as you prepare for the awe-inspiring views of the circuit.

Choose What Type of Trek Suits You Best

Before packing bags and deciding which route to take, you must ask important questions about your capabilities. A self-guided trek is the most common way of doing the Annapurna circuit, but you can choose a guiding company for added support and security. Decide how much time you can spend trekking or if you need to split it into two trips. And think about what terrain combination you might enjoy most — lower trails, high elevation routes with snowcapped mountains around? It is necessary, to be honest with yourself and rely on the experience and advice of the locals when making a decision.

Find the Right Trekked Guide or Company to Guide You on Your Trip

As previously mentioned, you can travel independently or with a guide. An experienced guide knows the trail, the culture, and any potential risks — but be sure to do your homework and make sure you’re hiring licensed, skilled professionals. A guided trek will also provide reminders and details like packing the right gear, getting adequate nutrition and hydration, knowing when to rest, and anticipating changing terrain. Finally, having an expert with you while navigating an unfamiliar environment is a great relieving feeling.

Why is the Annapurna Circuit Trek important, and how long does it take?

It is famous as Nepal’s classic trekking route, offering some of the finest views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri and passing through more varied terrain than most routes at an equivalent length. The landscape ranges from the sub-tropical forest and rice fields through alpine meadows, snow-capped peaks, and glacial valleys to the arid semi-desert of the high Tibetan plateau. Since Nepal Government opened to foreign travellers in 1977, this has become one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas.

The two-week trek is designed to give you in a short period an experience of the Annapurna region in all its variety. It begins in the lush, green valley around Besishahar with a gradual ascent along a rocky trail that follows the course of the Marsyandi River up to the village of Tal at an elevation of 1675m. It is a comparatively easy introduction to the area. The trek is suitable for anyone looking for an adventurous Himalayan experience.

Breathtaking views of the Himalayas form a constantly changing backdrop to the interesting little villages, temples, and natural wonders. Here you will experience the magnificent desolation of the Thorung La pass; the highest point at 5416m is marked by a traditional chorten or shrine adorned by prayer flags that make a brightly coloured beacon in the otherwise untouched landscape of rock and ice.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon your arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu, you will be warmly welcomed by our Airport Representative and transferred to the hotel. Overnight at hotel. B.B.

Day 2Jeep drive Kathmandu to Jagat

Jeep drive from Kathmandu to Jagat. 7 – 8 scenic drive through Prithivi highway. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 3Trek to Tal (1675m)

Trek to Tal (1675m). The day begins with the rocky trail following the Marsyandi Rivers steadily uphill to Tal at 1675m, the first village in the Manang district. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 4Trek to Danaque (2210m).

We walk through a wide and flat valley; then, the journey continues up and down to Dharapani at 1890m. There we find a stone entrance chorten typical of the Tibetan-influenced villages from here northwards. We then visit the Bagarchhap at 2160m which offers the typical flat roofed stone houses of local Tibetans, although the village is still in the transition Zone before the dry highlands. Finally, before we reach Danaque, we walk through a pine forest and mani walls. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 5Trek to Chame (2630m).

With often rough and rocky, the trail climbs to Tyanja at 2360m & then continues through forest, but near the river, to Kopar at 2590m. As we reach the Chame, the headquarters of the Manang district, we are rewarded by the fine views of Annapurna II as you approach Chame & two small hot springs by the town. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 6Trek to Pisang (3300m).

The day starts through a deep forest in a steep and narrow valley and crosses a river on a long bridge at 2910m. We then cross another bridge at 3040m; from there, the view of the soaring Paungda Danda rock face begins to appear. From there, the trail joins to climb to Pisang, which sprawls between 3200m & 3300m. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 7Trek to Manang (3500m).

Today we continue through the drier upper part of the Manang district, cut off from the full effect of the monsoon by the Anapurna Range. People of this region herd yaks & raise crops for part of the year. Besides, they continued enjoying special trading rights gained back in 1784.

Leaving Pisang, we have alternate trails north and south of the Marsyangdi River, which meets again at Mungji. The southern route by Hongde, with its airstrip, at 3325m, involves less climbing than the northern route via Ghyaru, though there are better views on the trail that follows the northern bank of the river. From Mungji, the trail continues past the picturesque but partially hidden village of Bryanga at 3475m to nearby Manang at 3500m. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 8Acclimatization day

Today we spent a day acclimatizing in Manang. The whole day we spend by doing some fine day walks and overviewing the magnificent views around the village & the day time is best to gain altitude. Finally, we return to our accommodation & have a night’s rest. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 9Trek to Ledar (4250m).

Today we leave Manang, & the trail makes an ascent of nearly 2000m to the Thorung La pass. We do the climb steadily through Tenki, leaving the Marsyangi Valley. Continuing along the Jarsang Khola Valley, we reach Ledar at 4250m; there, we see the vegetation steadily more sparse. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 10Trek to Phedi or High camp (4600m).

The trail descends to cross the river at 4310m; we climb up to Phedi at 4420m. At High Camp on an elevation of 4600m, we can recently find some good Guesthouses built. Your overnight stay will be there. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 11Trek to Muktinath (3710m).

The journey from Phedi, “foot of the hill”, or at the foot of the 5416m Thorung La pass, begins the day. We then climb steeply, which is regularly used and easy to follow. However, the problem may arise due to the altitude and snow. Crossing the pass often causes terrible problems if it is covered by snow. Finally, after about four hours, climb up to the pass marked by the chortens & prayer flags. You are rewarded with a magnificent view from the top as you reach the top. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 12Trek to Jomsom (2713m.)

Trek to Jomsom (2713m.). Treks end here. Overnight at Guest House. B.L.D.

Day 13Fly Back to Pokhara.

Fly back to Pokhara from Jomsom (about 20 minutes short but scenic flight). Overnight at hotel. B.L.D.

Day 14Kathmandu

Drive back to Kathmandu by private car through Prithivi highway. Overnight at hotel. B.B.

Day 15Departure

Transfer to Airport for your onward Journey. Farewell!

Dear Tilak, Bhairam, Chhapi and Arjun

Many thanks for a wonderful experience on the AC trek.

Thank you to Bhairam for overseeing our trip so efficiently and courteously. Everything went very smoothly, even when we changed our plans slightly.

Chhabi, our guide, was a real star and was a great companion on our trek. He ensured we had everything we needed – and got us to the top of Thorung-la without a hitch!

Arjun, our porter, was also brilliant – a multitalented porter cum guide cum cook.

The Annapurna Circuit trek was an absolute joy. We had trekked to Muktinath over 20 years ago, but this was our first time on the Manang side, and we loved it – the views were sensational, and the villages and countryside were a delight. The road is coming, so I suggest people see it before the impact is too great.

The road on the Jomsom side has harmed the trekking experience, but new trails are being opened up that avoid the road, so I recommend you give yourself enough time to explore these (see the book by Andreas de Ruiter Prem Rai about the new NATT trails).

After Kagbeni (which you should visit), we decided to take transport to Tatopani to save time and avoid trekking on the road.

Ghorepani and the route to Tadapani and Ghandruk are road free and stunning (if a little ‘crowded’ when we were there in March).

I recommend Nepal Hiking to anyone interested in trekking, and we will be back!

Thanks again to everyone who made our trek a happy and memorable experience.

Best wishes

Dear Tilak,

I am writing to say how much we enjoyed our trek in the Annapurna region. We were very fortunate to have such a good guide (Ram) and such good porters (Amar and Babu).

In particular, I would like to let you know some things we especially value.

Flexible itinerary:
Flexible itinerary designed to enable us to do what we wanted and modified as we went along when circumstances changed.

Safety:
It was always a very high priority for our guide. Ram monitored us, our environment and our circumstances continually and closely. We felt reassured that he took our safety very seriously, particularly concerning the physical terrain, our health, and our potential to get lost in unfamiliar city streets.

Accommodation:
The accommodation was always clean, and respect was shown for our privacy. Care was taken to ensure we were comfortable.

Information and advice:
Information and advice were invaluable. This included Ram’sRam’s local knowledge of the area, awareness of Western food requirements and potential difficulties, encouragement, and guidance concerning local customs and expectations.

Friendly, helpful and unobtrusive:
Our guide and porters were friendly at all times and helpful. They were never intrusive or pushy. It was always done gently and carefully if we needed to be hurried along (e.g. ordering meals).

We were particularly grateful for your company’s “airport to airport” service, the protection and advice regarding touts at the airport, and the welcome and care that were taken to establish the initial framework for the trek.

In addition, when we needed a solution to a problem, it was provided quickly and without fuss (for example, when we left our passes in Kathmandu and were in Pokhara).

It was wonderful not to have to organise a thing from the moment we arrived until we left.

We were also very pleased that your company ensures that your guides and porters have appropriate clothing and are well looked after during the trek.

Thank you again, Tilak, for the experience of a lifetime. I hope to return to your wonderful Nepal very soon.

I appreciate you passing on our thanks to Ram, Amar and Babu.

With our very best wishes,

ROBYN HARRISON AND TIM PULSFORD

I just wanted to thank you for one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. You and your staff did everything you said you would do and, in many cases, went above and beyond to ensure that we had a pleasant trip. Although you couldn’t have possibly planned the chemistry between myself and the other group members, I will give you credit nonetheless. We meshed extremely well, and I now count several new friends in my repertoire.

You run a terrific company Tilak, and I will not hesitate to recommend Nepal Hiking to anyone who asks. You have also whetted my appetite for travel in Nepal, and in 2 or 3 years, I plan to return and do the Annapurna circuit. Hopefully, Ganga will still be a guide and can make the trip with me. Speaking of which, I wanted to thank Ganga for being such a great guide and person. I feel honoured to have met him and thoroughly enjoyed his company (as did the rest of the group).

I look forward to our next trek together! Special thanks to Bishnu, who often went above and beyond the call of duty. He looked after Kamran when he had fallen behind. He is a great kid! Our guide in Kathmandu (whose name I have forgotten) was also fantastic and knowledgeable.

You have a great staff! Please feel free to give out my email address to anyone who asks. Also, I’d be happy to answer anyone’s questions.

Best wishes,
