Embark on a journey of natural wonders and mesmerizing beauty with a trip to the Chola Pass Trek. Learn about the trek with our comprehensive guide, plan your adventure, and explore breathtaking views along the way!

The Chola Pass is at an elevation of 5330 metres. It’s an ideal trek that provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy the breathtaking view of Mount Everest. It also includes several similar peaks and explores the Buddhist monasteries at the world’s highest elevation.

This unique trek takes you to the home of the legendary local community on the foothill of the world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest. This 18-day trek follows the highly praised trekking route through the Dudh Koshi to the water source of Gokyo Lake, west of the Everest Base Camp.

To join this trek, you will start from Lukla and travel to Namche Bazar. After 2 nights in Namche Bazar, you will trek to the Gokyo Valley. After a few days of the trek, you will reach Gokyo Lake. Next, you will explore the valley, including the summit of Gokyo Peak (5483 metres). The summit offers a fantastic panoramic view of Cho Oyo, Everest, and Makalu from the peak. Furthermore, travelling through Khumbu Himal, Gokyo Valley, the Chola Pass, and Everest Base Camp will reward you with the most dramatic landscape views.

You can treat the trek as one of the most adventurous in the Himalayas, as it follows the route via a high pass into Khumbu. Crossing the high Pass, you will return to Lukla following the route through Everest Base Camp, Kala Pathar, Tyangboche monastery, Khumjung village, and Namche Bazar.

What is the Chola Pass?

The Pass is a high-altitude mountain between Gokyo Lake and Everest Base Camp, at 533o metres. The trek traverses glaciers and rocky terrain, offering breathtaking views from the Pass. It is considered one of the most difficult treks in the Khumbu region due to its challenging ascents, steep descents and unpredictable weather conditions.

Physical Difficulty of the Chola Pass Trek

As mentioned above, the trek is among the most challenging and physically demanding. It requires you to be in good physical shape as it involves long, steep climbs and descents that can be quite strenuous for novice hikers. Therefore, it is important to prepare well beforehand. In addition, altitude sickness can be challenging.

Climate Considerations on Chola Pass

Being aware of the climate on the Chola Pass trek is important. The temperatures can be extremely cold while you are higher on the trail, making it crucial to bring adequate winter clothing and supplies. Temperature levels can drop to -15°C or below, and strong winds add chill factors. Before departing, check long-term and short-term forecasts for weather patterns and plan your trip accordingly.

What to Pack on Chola Pass Trek?

Good clothing, shoes and additional gear will help make your trek much more enjoyable and safe. Pack some thermal layers, gloves, a hat, a scarf, a thick winter jacket and waterproof trousers to keep you warm. Besides this, other essential items include nuts and chocolate bars that provide substantial energy and a good pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays. It is also important to have a first-aid kit prepared for any unexpected injuries or medical emergencies.

I just wanted to thank you and your wonderful staff for my incredible trip to Gokyo Ri, Chola Pass, Kalapathar and Everest Base Camp. It was the best trip of my life. I especially want to thank my guide, Ram, and porter, Santos, who made the trip much easier than ever imagined. The scenery was incredible and will forever be remembered by me. Your staff in Kathmandu was always there to ensure everything was running smoothly. After talking to those on the trail which did not have guides or porters about their difficulties, I cannot imagine even attempting the trip without my wonderful help.

I also had a great time on the tour of Kathmandu, river rafting and Chitwan National Park. It was a great way to end my trip. The hotels in Kathmandu and Chitwan were especially nice. I did not expect such luxury at such a great price.

I look forward to returning to Nepal to do the Annapurna Circuit. I look forward to seeing everyone again.
Thanks again.

Six friends chose to trek to Gokyo Lakes, Chola Pass and Everest Base Camp. We looked at several companies, and after exchanging initial polite, informative emails, good Trip Advisor reports, and previous friends who liked their services, we chose Nepal Hiking — we haven’t regretted our decision for one moment. Bhairam answered all our enquiries promptly, we were given all the necessary information before travelling, and their service from beginning to end was faultless.

They also provided us with a complimentary Traditional Nepalese Dinner. Our guides and porters were friendly, charming and helpful, and we heard about the lengthy training they must do before becoming a guide. At all times, we felt safe. Thank you, Bhairam and everyone in the company, very much.

Dear Tilak,

I have been travelling a lot, but the trekking trip to Gokyo Lake, Chola Pass and Everest Base Camp was the best holiday I have ever spent. Like five years ago, there was nothing to complain about in the Annapurna region.

In a word, everything was perfect again. Thank you for our trip’s fantastic arrangement, planning and organisation. The service was great and professional.

Every day we could enjoy spectacular views, sceneries and landscapes. I will never forget these days in my life.

A special Thank You also to our guide Lok and our porter Raj. They were the best possible duo, always nice, kind and helpful. Once, I struggled one day; they even carried my small backpack. But, eventually, we became friends very soon.

This was our second time in Nepal, but not the last one. And, of course, you will also arrange and plan our third trip. There is no doubt about it! Thank you very much again for everything. I do appreciate your kindness and hospitality.

Take care and all the best. See you again soon.

Kind regards
