This unique trekking adventure takes place in Nepal, where you’ll experience some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. Your journey begins in Kathmandu, where you’ll stay in an exclusive hotel before flying to Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu region. Here you’ll board a small plane flying you over the Himalayas to Lukla and trek to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the Everest Region. After acclimatising to the altitude, you’ll hike through the lush local community villages of Thame, Khumjung, Tengboche, Pangboche, and Dingboche to reach Gorak Shep, gateway to Everest Base Camp. 

Gorak Shep is 5160m above sea level, the last village before reaching Everest Base Camp. After spending three days exploring the area, including a hike to Kalapathar (5545m) and Everest Base Camp, you’ll fly back to Lukla by helicopter and catch your flight back to Kathmandu.

What to expect on the trek

The hike to Everest Base Camp is a challenging adventure. It starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and a short walk to Phakding, where you will stay overnight before continuing your journey to Namche Bazaar. Next, you will walk to Gorakshep via Tengboche, Pangboche and Dingboche, the gateway to Mount Everest. Finally, you will spend three nights there before flying back to Lukla by helicopter.

During the trek, we will arrange an English-speaking guide and 1 porter, shared among two trekkers. We will provide meals (3 times) a day and accommodation at comfortable tea house lodges. Also, we advise you to carry some energy chocolate, which will boost you to walk in the mountain.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu (1350 metres)

Upon your arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), you will be met by our Airport Representative and transferred to hotel Kathmandu Suite Home or a nearby hotel of a similar standard (breakfast included). Your trek organiser at NepalHiking will brief you about the trek plan and introduce you to your guide. If you arrive in Kathmandu by noon, you may do a walking tour to Kathmandu Durbar Square (old palace) and the local market of Asan Bazar (optional).

Day 2Flight Kathmandu to Lukla (2804 meters) and trek to Phakding (2610 meters)

After taking early morning breakfast, you will drive to Airport (15 minutes) and enjoy a 30 – minute exciting flight to Lukla (2804 metres). After meeting your trek crews, you will embark on the first-day trek to Phakding (2610 metres).

Enjoying the view of the landscape and villages and crossing a couple of streams and bridges, you will reach Phakding in 3 hours. There is a probability of a flight delay or cancellation even in the excellent season of October – November or March – April. If the flight is on time, you will reach Phakding at lunchtime. In case of any delay, you will stop for lunch in Lukla or after an hour walking from Lukla.

Day 3Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3535 meters)

After breakfast at around 7 am, you will start your 2nd-day trek following Phakding village and the local market; then, you will cross an iron bridge over the Dudh Koshi river. After a couple of hours of easy trail following the river, you will arrive at Manjo and Jorsale, where you will stop for lunch. In Jorsale, there is a Check Post for trek permits (Sagarmatha National Park office). After lunch, you will register your trek permit at the check-post and enter the Sagarmatha National Park zone. From here, the trail descends for 10 minutes, crosses the bridge, and continues the trek following the Dudh Koshi river; the trail will gradually ascend until you reach the last high bridge over the Bhote Koshi river. From here, the trail ascent steeply until you reach Namche Bazar. It is an approximately 6 hours trek.

Day 4Acclimatisation day in Namche Bazar (Day trek / hike of the valley)

As you are already above 3000 metres, spending two nights in Namche Bazar is recommended to avoid any high altitude sickness risk with a side trip to Khumjung village of Thame.
Today after breakfast, you go for a day hiking to Syangboche, Khungde (3840 metres), and even further to Khumjung (3780 metres) or Thame as optional. It is also worth visiting Sagarmatha National Park Museum as a side trip. On this day, you will be thrilled to overlook the fantastic views of the Himalayan ranges, including Amadablam, Thamserku, Kusum Kangaru, Lhotse, and Mount Everest.

Day 5Trek from Namche to Tengboche (3850 metres)

Today’s total trek duration will be approximately 5 – 6 hours. After leaving Namche Bazar, you will follow the well-defined curving trail overlooking the mountain views. After 1 hour trek, you will reach Khyangjumpa (3550 metres), where some guest houses and tea shops are located. This place also offers a fantastic view of Mount Ama Dablam. From here, the trail descends to Sanasa and reaches Phunki Tenga (3150 meters) in one hour and 30 minutes. You may stop here for lunch. After crossing the river, the trail ascent follows the delightful pine, rhododendron, and birch forest. In 2 hour’s trek, you will reach Tengboche, situated on the hillside. This place offers an excellent view of Mount Amadablam and a glimpse of Mount Everest. While you are here in Tengboche, it would also be worth visiting the old “Tengboche Monastery” in the morning or evening, the time of prayers.

Day 6Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4410 metres)

You will take breakfast at around 7 am and start the trek at 8 am. After leaving the Tengboche Monastery, you will trek down through the pine and rhododendron forest, and in about 20 minutes, you will reach Deboche (3820 metres). For another 20 minutes, you continue your trek through the pine, rhododendron, and birch forest until you reach the bridge and ascent again after crossing the Imja river. After about 1 hour ascending, you will reach Pangboche (3930 metres). You will stop here for lunch.
As a side trip, it would also be worth visiting the Pangboche monastery, the oldest Gompa in the Khumbu region. After lunch, you will continue the trek following the Imja river with a gradual ascent, and after an hour, you will reach a major trail junction (4175 metres). The left trail leads to Pheriche, and the right trail leads to Dingboche. From the junction, you will descend to a bridge by crossing the Imja river and ascend again to reach Dingboche in an hour.

Day 7Acclimatization day in Dingboche

Now you are at the elevation of 4400 metres above sea level! Congratulation, you are all fit and refined with the altitude. However, you will acclimatise here to avoid any further risk of altitude.
After breakfast, your guide will take you for a hiking trip to Chhukung valley, then return to Dingboche by the evening. Do your best to get as high as possible up to Chhukung Ri (5546 metres), and don’t miss out on witnessing Mt. Makalu, the 5th highest mountain.

Day 8Trek from Dingboche to Labuje (4950 metres)

No doubt, after the big days, you are even much more vital for the Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar. On the way to Labuje, you will be rewarded with an impressive view of the Himalayas and reach Labuje within 4 – 5 hours of your trek.

Day 9Trek to Everest Base Camp (5400 metres)

Today is your final goal for Everest Base Camp!!
Today, you will leave early morning (5 am) for Everest Base camp; it will take approximately 3-4 hours to reach Gorakshep (5160 metres), the last settlement before Everest Base Camp. You will stop at Gorakshep for breakfast, continue the trek to Everest Base camp (3 hours), and return to Gorakshep (2 hours) for an overnight stay.

Day 10Hike/trek to Kalapathar (5545 metres) and return to Lukla and Kathmandu

Get ready for another exciting day!

Kalapathar is the best vantage point to observe Mount Everest at a closer range. Recommended to start your hike at 5 am (2 hours) to get to the top of Kalapathar, then return to Lukla and Kathmandu by helicopter.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) about Everest Base Camp Trek

I'm solo traveller, can I book the trek?

We are a local trek operator. No matter how small or big the group size is, we will operate the trek for any size, from solo trekkers to bigger group sizes. Thus, without any hesitation, you can book the trek!

When is the best time for Everest Base Camp Trek?

Firstly, mid-September till the end of November is the best season to trek for the best travel experience. So, for the best photography experience, you should plan this trek during the period. Secondly, you can trek from March till mid of June.

In Nepal, from mid-June to mid-September is monsoon season. In other words, trekking is not recommended during this period. Similarly, the weather is not favourable from December through February. However, you can still trek during that time, but not highly recommended.

How can I be prepared for the trek?

The base camp trek is demanding and challenging compared to other treks as it is located at a high altitude. Therefore, be physically and mentally prepared to complete the trek successfully. To prevent high altitude sickness, you should go slowly and ensure that your body is being adjusted with thin air.

How to start my trek to Everest Base Camp?

To start your adventure Everest Base Camp trek, you will take a half an hour exciting flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the “Gateway to Mt. Everest.” First, you will trek from Lukla and enjoy your first-day hike to reach the local community villages of Phakding and Namche Bazar. Then, moving further up, you will trek towards Tengboche Monastery, located on the top of the mountain ridge, reflecting the prominent local culture. Then, you will trek further towards Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep, and then importantly, you will eventually reach Everest base camp and Kalapathar.

After exploring 360-degree panoramic views of the Himalayas, you will trek back to Lukla and then to Kathmandu by flight.

How difficult is Everest Base Camp Trek?

In our trek itinerary, we have mentioned that the lowest elevation at the start of your trek is 2804 metres – the Lukla after your flight from Kathmandu and the highest elevation is 5545 metres- the Kalapathar.
As long as you are mentally and spiritually prepared and physically fit, the higher elevation is not an issue. But if you have a backache or knee pain problem, you should consult your doctor. Among the trekkers who book trips with us, 60% of trekkers book the Everest Base Camp Trek. Overall, they had a great time with a 99% success rate.

Can I do Everest Base Camp Trek in December and January?

Definitely yes! In the past, we operated many treks in December and January with a 99% success rate. These months are the coldest months of the year, but the weather is perfect with fewer crowds of trekkers.
