About the Founder – Tilak Thapa Magar

Tilak Thapa Magar is the Founder and Managing Director of Nepal Hiking Pvt. Ltd., a trekking and adventure travel company established in Nepal in 2003. Raised in Jyamrung, Dhading, he grew up in a rural hill community and has spent much of his life working in tourism, community development, and rural Nepal.

A licensed trekking guide (Licence No. 3225/060) and tourist guide (Licence No. 277/068), Tilak has more than two decades of experience leading and organising journeys throughout Nepal, including the Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu regions. Alongside his work in tourism, Tilak holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Rural Development from Tribhuvan University and is currently pursuing an MPhil leading to a PhD in Tourism and Development Studies. His academic interests include mountain tourism, rural livelihoods, and community-based development.

Between 2017 and 2022, he served as President of Ward No. 11, Neelkantha Municipality, Dhading. He has also been involved in a range of educational, social, and community initiatives. Under his leadership, Nepal Hiking Pvt. Ltd. received the Tourism Business Award 2018 in recognition of its contribution to Nepal’s tourism sector.

Today, Tilak continues to combine practical tourism experience with academic research, supporting responsible tourism and locally based travel throughout Nepal.
