Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

For those who love high-altitude trekking, the Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek offers an exciting challenge. Situated in the Annapurna region of Nepal, this trek offers more than just a mountainous journey; it is a genuine trial of endurance and a venture into the adventurous.

Journey Begins: The Route from Beni to Dhaulagiri

The adventure begins in Beni, following a lengthy 8-9 hour drive from Kathmandu. From here, trekkers trace the route of the Myagdi Khola River towards the towering Dhaulagiri. The trail winds through genuine Magar villages, giving trekkers the opportunity to dive into local culture against the breathtaking Himalayan scenery.

Ascending Through the Mountains

As the trek continues, the scenery changes drastically—from lush farming villages to the stark, snow-blanketed areas near the Chhonbardan Glacier. With each step, trekkers are treated to stunning views of Dhaulagiri and other imposing peaks, each rising more than 7,000 meters above sea level.

The Challenge of Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek

Arriving at Dhaulagiri Base Camp is a triumphant moment. Situated at the foot of the world’s seventh-highest mountain, the base camp offers a moment of respite before the next phase of the journey. Trekkers can soak in the panoramic views and prepare for the challenging climbs.

Tackling French Pass and Dhampus Peak

The trek becomes more challenging as adventurers climb the glacier and cross the daunting French Pass at 5,360 meters. For those feeling particularly daring, the trek can extend to include the climb of Dhampus Peak, standing proud at 6,060 meters. This addition challenges even the most seasoned mountaineers but promises unparalleled satisfaction upon reaching the summit.

Descending to the Hidden Valley and Beyond

Following the exhilaration of the high passes and peaks, the trek descends into the serene Hidden Valley. This isolated expanse offers a peaceful contrast to the earlier rigours of the journey. The trek then descends to Jomsom, a charming village renowned for its breathtaking scenery and rich cultural heritage.

Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek Ends: Return to Civilization

The journey ends in Marpha, a delightful village known for its apple orchards. From there, trekkers take a jeep back to Pokhara, enjoying a scenic drive along some of Nepal’s most beautiful roads. Although flying from Jomsom to Pokhara is an option, unpredictable weather often makes road travel more reliable.

Conclusion: An Unforgettable Expedition

The Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek is not just a physical journey but an exploration of one’s limits against some of the world’s most awe-inspiring scenery. With thorough support from NepalHiking, which includes English-speaking guides, cooks, and porters, trekkers can deeply engage with their surroundings, making every step on these remote paths truly memorable. Whether it’s the challenge of Dhampus Peak or the allure of high-altitude passes, this trek is a testament to the spirit of adventure that dwells within every mountaineer.

I recently went on a trek around Dhaulagiri with Nepal Hiking. Like before, they gave great service at a good price. They picked me up from Tribhuvan airport, provided clean places to stay in Kathmandu, and had helpful porters and guides. They really care about their customers’ safety and happiness.

The Dhaulagiri Trek was hard and far away. There were steep hills, landslides, a lot of snow, and it was very cold. But Nepal Hiking had skilled leaders, good gear, and really looked after us. You should try them; you’ll be glad you did.
