Continuing your journey north, Day 3 takes you from Tatopani to the gateway of Upper Mustang — Kagbeni. The route covers around 90 kilometers (56 miles), and the altitude climbs significantly from 1,190 meters (3,904 feet) to 2,800 meters (9,186 feet). The 4 to 5-hour drive takes you through the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, and past the charming apple-growing villages of Marpha and Jomsom. You’ll visit historic sites such as the Royal Palace, the Jampa and Thubchen monasteries, and explore the fascinating Jhong Cave in the nearby village of Chhoser. For those interested, an optional pony ride or light hike into the surrounding canyons is available. The day is unhurried, allowing for deep cultural immersion. You’ll spend a second night in a lodge in Lo Manthang.

After breakfast, you begin the return journey with a drive back to Jomsom, taking a different and equally scenic route via Dhakmar. The 90-kilometer (56-mile) trip descends from 3,840 meters (12,598 feet) to 2,743 meters (8,999 feet) and takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. This route features crimson cliffs, ancient sky caves, and traditional mud-brick settlements, offering a new perspective of Mustang’s raw beauty. Arrive in the bustling trade town of Jomsom, where you’ll stay overnight at a guesthouse.

On Day 7, your journey retraces the route southward from Jomsom back to Pokhara. The drive is about 155 kilometers (96 miles), descending from 2,743 meters to 822 meters, and takes around 7 to 8 hours depending on road conditions. Along the way, you’ll pass through Marpha’s apple orchards again, traverse the river-cut Kali Gandaki Valley, and see peaceful Magar villages nestled in the hills. Once in Pokhara, enjoy a well-earned rest with an overnight stay at a comfortable hotel.

The final day of your adventure takes you back from Pokhara to Kathmandu, covering the same 200 kilometers (124 miles) you traveled on Day 1, but this time in reverse – rising from 822 meters back to 1,400 meters.
