Itinerary

Day 1Kathmandu to Pokhara

Your overland journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, covering a distance of approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles). You’ll descend from an elevation of 1,400 meters (4,593 feet) in Kathmandu to 822 meters (2,697 feet) in Pokhara. The 6 to 7-hour drive along the Prithvi Highway offers panoramic views of the Trishuli River, lush valleys, terraced farmland, and glimpses of the distant Himalayas. Upon arrival, unwind in the lakeside town of Pokhara, a vibrant gateway to the Annapurna region. You will spend the night at a hotel in Pokhara.

Day 2Pokhara to Tatopani

On the second day, you leave the city behind and journey deeper into the hills toward Tatopani. The drive spans 105 kilometers (65 miles), rising from 822 meters to 1,190 meters in elevation. It takes approximately 5 to 6 hours to complete. As the road winds through Baglung and Beni, you’ll pass stunning waterfalls, local hill settlements, and lush forested trails. Your day concludes in Tatopani, a village renowned for its natural hot springs, where you can soak in warm mineral baths to relax after the drive. You’ll stay overnight in a lodge in Tatopani.

Day 3Tatopani to Kagbeni

Continuing your journey north, Day 3 takes you from Tatopani to the gateway of Upper Mustang — Kagbeni. The route covers around 90 kilometers (56 miles), and the altitude climbs significantly from 1,190 meters (3,904 feet) to 2,800 meters (9,186 feet). The 4 to 5-hour drive takes you through the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, and past the charming apple-growing villages of Marpha and Jomsom. You’ll experience the stark change in landscape as pine forests give way to arid, windswept valleys. Overnight accommodation is arranged at a traditional guesthouse in Kagbeni.

Day 4Kagbeni to Lo Manthang

On Day 4, the adventure continues as you drive from Kagbeni to the heart of Upper Mustang – the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang. This leg of the journey spans about 75 kilometers (47 miles), ascending from 2,800 meters (9,186 feet) to 3,840 meters (12,598 feet). It takes roughly 4 to 5 hours to drive along rugged dirt tracks that pass through wind-eroded cliffs, desert canyons, and remote Tibetan-style villages such as Chhusang, Ghami, and Tsarang. Prayer flags flutter, chortens dot the landscape, and the remoteness of the region becomes palpable. You will stay in a lodge within the mystical city of Lo Manthang.

Day 5Full Day Exploration in Lo Manthang

Today is dedicated to exploring the timeless beauty and spirituality of Lo Manthang. Situated at 3,840 meters (12,598 feet), the city offers a rare window into traditional Tibetan culture. You’ll visit historic sites such as the Royal Palace, the Jampa and Thubchen monasteries, and explore the fascinating Jhong Cave in the nearby village of Chhoser. For those interested, an optional pony ride or light hike into the surrounding canyons is available. The day is unhurried, allowing for deep cultural immersion. You’ll spend a second night in a lodge in Lo Manthang.

Day 6Lo Manthang to Jomsom via Dhakmar

After breakfast, you begin the return journey with a drive back to Jomsom, taking a different and equally scenic route via Dhakmar. The 90-kilometer (56-mile) trip descends from 3,840 meters (12,598 feet) to 2,743 meters (8,999 feet) and takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. This route features crimson cliffs, ancient sky caves, and traditional mud-brick settlements, offering a new perspective of Mustang’s raw beauty. Arrive in the bustling trade town of Jomsom, where you’ll stay overnight at a guesthouse.

Day 7Jomsom to Pokhara

On Day 7, your journey retraces the route southward from Jomsom back to Pokhara. The drive is about 155 kilometers (96 miles), descending from 2,743 meters to 822 meters, and takes around 7 to 8 hours depending on road conditions. Along the way, you’ll pass through Marpha’s apple orchards again, traverse the river-cut Kali Gandaki Valley, and see peaceful Magar villages nestled in the hills. Once in Pokhara, enjoy a well-earned rest with an overnight stay at a comfortable hotel.

Day 8Pokhara to Kathmandu

The final day of your adventure takes you back from Pokhara to Kathmandu, covering the same 200 kilometers (124 miles) you traveled on Day 1, but this time in reverse – rising from 822 meters back to 1,400 meters. The 6 to 7-hour drive winds through scenic mid-hill terrain, across rivers, and past terraced farmland. As you reach the capital, your incredible Upper Mustang road trip officially concludes, leaving you with memories of a remote Himalayan kingdom that few travelers get to experience so intimately.
