Known as the Last Forbidden Kingdom, Upper Mustang remained restricted to foreign visitors until 1992. Its distinctive landscape, centuries-old cultural traditions and remote settlements make it one of the most fascinating destinations for motorcycle adventure in Nepal.

This Upper Mustang motorcycle tour combines challenging off-road riding with cultural exploration and spectacular mountain scenery. The route takes you from Kathmandu and Pokhara into the Kali Gandaki Valley, through Jomsom and Kagbeni, and onwards to Lo Manthang.

Whether you are planning a private motorcycle expedition with friends or joining a small group of adventure riders, Nepal Hiking can organise a journey suited to your riding experience and travel preferences.

Essential Travel Information

Best Time for the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are popular seasons for motorcycle travel in Nepal, with generally favourable conditions for mountain journeys.

Upper Mustang lies in a rain-shadow region, so it can also be considered during the monsoon season (June to August). However, access roads through lower valleys may be affected by rainfall, landslides and changing conditions.

Winter (December to February) can bring freezing temperatures and snow, particularly at higher elevations. Travel during this period requires careful planning.

Permits Required for Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang is a restricted area in Nepal. Foreign visitors need the following permits:

  • Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Restricted-area entry is subject to specific permit conditions, including group and guide requirements. Our team can assist with the necessary documentation and permit arrangements.

Motorcycle Options

Depending on availability and the riding requirements, motorcycle options may include:

  • Royal Enfield 350cc
  • Royal Enfield 500cc
  • Dirt bikes upon request

The most suitable motorcycle depends on the rider’s experience, the planned route and personal preference. Confirm the motorcycle model, rental arrangements and any applicable licence requirements before booking.

Group Size and Private Tours

We welcome private motorcycle tours and group enquiries. Solo travellers can also enquire about joining a guided arrangement, subject to the applicable restricted-area requirements.

Private tours allow greater flexibility with departure dates, riding pace, accommodation and sightseeing stops.

Fitness, Riding Experience and Safety

This is a challenging adventure involving long-distance riding, high-altitude travel and sections of rough road. Riders should have previous motorcycle experience, particularly on gravel and uneven surfaces.

Altitude, cold temperatures, dust and changing road conditions can make riding more demanding. Appropriate protective equipment, a valid motorcycle licence, travel insurance covering motorcycle riding and high-altitude travel, and a suitable riding pace are important.

Guides and support vehicles provide additional assistance, but they cannot eliminate the risks associated with mountain motorcycling.

Prefer a Jeep Tour or a Combination of Jeep Travel and Trekking?

If you would rather explore Upper Mustang without riding a motorcycle, Nepal Hiking offers alternative ways to discover the region.
